| SPC 2Q26 QUARTERLY REPORT |
SPC Power Corporation (SPC) recently released its SEC Form 17-Q quarterly report for the period ending June 30, 2026. While top-line revenues registered solid double-digit expansion on the back of rising energy demand, operational headwinds and soaring global fuel costs squeezed gross margins and weighed on overall bottom-line profitability.
Below is a detailed breakdown of SPC’s interim financial performance for the second quarter and first half of 2026.
Key Pillars: Financial Statement Analysis
1. Income Statement Analysis
For the six months ended June 30, 2026 (1H 2026), SPC reported consolidated revenues of ₱1,284.2 million, up 16.8% from ₱1,099.5 million in 1H 2025. The growth was driven primarily by stronger spot market prices and elevated merchant energy sales following the resumption of Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) operations on May 1, 2026, alongside higher summer demand in the Visayas Grid.
Despite top-line expansion, profitability took a severe hit:
Cost of Operations: Surged by 187.9% year-over-year (YoY) to ₱804.4 million in 1H 2026 (and jumped 206.8% to ₱596.8 million for Q2 alone). Higher diesel fuel prices—exacerbated by Middle East geopolitical tensions—coupled with increased dispatch volume, drove expenses higher.
Gross Margin: Dropped 41.5% YoY to ₱479.8 million as fuel costs eroded revenue gains.
General & Administrative Expenses: Contracted 10.2% YoY to ₱107.8 million, demonstrating effective cost management.
Equity in Net Earnings of Associates: Grew 4.2% to ₱257.7 million in 1H 2026. Improved operating results from power distribution associate MECO outweighed lower earnings from coal-fired associate KSPC.
Total Comprehensive Income: Declined 19.1% YoY to ₱712.2 million for 1H 2026 (and fell 39.0% YoY to ₱393.9 million for Q2 2026).
Key Profitability Ratios: Earnings Per Share (EPS) dropped to ₱0.48 (from ₱0.59 in 1H 2025), while Return on Equity (ROE) decreased to 6.22% (from 7.97%).
2. Balance Sheet Analysis
SPC's financial position remains well-capitalized with strong structural support:
Total Assets: Stood at ₱14,091.0 million as of June 30, 2026, an increase of 4.2% compared to ₱13,521.2 million at year-end 2025.
Property, Plant, and Equipment (PPE): Surged 227.6% to ₱1,398.6 million (from ₱427.0 million at year-end 2025), primarily reflecting construction-in-progress expenditures for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) expansion projects in Bohol and Iloilo.
Total Liabilities: Reduced by 7.3% to ₱1,810.2 million, down from ₱1,952.6 million as of December 31, 2025. This decrease was driven by the settlement of previously declared cash dividends.
Debt Structure: Total debt reached ₱979.1 million, comprising a current portion of ₱500.0 million and long-term bank debt of ₱479.1 million from China Bank to fund BESS capital projects.
Liquidity & Solvency Ratios: The Current Ratio strengthened significantly to 6.07 (up from 4.30 in Dec 2025). Debt Ratio remained conservative at 0.13, and Debt-to-Equity stood at 0.15.
3. Cash Flow Statement Analysis
Operating Cash Flows: Net cash provided by operating activities fell 54.2% YoY to ₱334.6 million for 1H 2026. The drop resulted from higher fuel inventory payments, increased trade receivables from WESM transactions, and income tax payments.
Investing Cash Flows: Outflows expanded to ₱786.0 million (compared to an inflow of ₱26.7 million in 1H 2025), directly driven by aggressive capital allocation toward BESS construction.
Financing Cash Flows: Outflows reached ₱163.2 million, reflecting dividend distributions and lease liability settlements, offset by proceeds from the long-term credit facility.
Cash Position: Overall cash and cash equivalents stood at a healthy ₱6,443.1 million at the end of June 2026.
Investment Case: Bull vs. Bear
Summary
SPC Power Corporation demonstrated resilient top-line revenue growth in 1H 2026, spurred by favorable WESM pricing dynamics and tight energy supply across the Visayas Grid. However, a near-tripling of operating costs driven by international fuel price volatility significantly squeezed profit margins, causing net income to contract.
Despite short-term earnings pressure, SPC maintains an exceptionally clean balance sheet characterized by negligible debt levels, robust cash holdings, and strong liquidity ratios. The company's strategic pivot toward Battery Energy Storage Systems positions it well for long-term power grid stabilization and sustainable future growth.
